Advertising is an integral part of trade and commerce in human civilization. It has been around since people in ancient times started selling or bartering goods with others. But essentially its main objective was to announce the presence of a trading outpost, a skilled individual who peddled his services, or to give information about something or someone which is no longer just the case today.

Into the New World

In the past, it was enough to use plain signs to mark a store's location or to tell buyers what is in the inventory. But through the years as the world's population grew, advertising became more than just a way to let others know of an enterprise's existence. It became a powerful tool that businessmen use to gain more profits and give them the edge over the competition.

Ordinary text signs were replaced by ornately designed brand markers which are more commonly known today as logos. Simple invitations to buy were replaced by tempting promises of instant gratification upon use of the merchant's products. Designers, painters, and creative individuals were given the task to make a company or an individual stand out from the rest through carefully planned advertising. Indeed, it marked the coming of the new age in business marketing.

Advertising Today

Any businessman worth his salt recognizes the fact that no enterprise will ever survive without the aid of proper marketing. With the advent of new technology like mobile communications and the internet, consumers have grown more powerful over the last two decades which makes it vital for business owners to maximize their efforts in capturing their attention. How can they do it? There are several methods being used in advertising today that were not possible in the past.

Not so long ago, one way communication was the preferred practice for marketing. Companies pay ad makers to come out with commercials that try to win over consumers. But despite its effectiveness, many people still find the method lacking. For one, there was no way for users to get information about what the product can do not unless they buy it first which for many was forced selling. But because there was no better alternative at the time, printing companies, radio and TV stations thrived in this set-up.

But everything changed when the internet was born and mobile technology vastly improved. A two-way communication form of advertising became available to the people. Now it is possible to learn about what a company is selling even without actually buying a product. Does this hurt businessmen?

Maybe but those really affected by this change are businesses that do not have good products to sell in the first place. The bottom line is that consumers are willing to pay and buy for things that are worth their money. No amount of advertising can really change that fact.
